Dr. Ali received his B.Sc. Engineer- ing degree from BUET in 1988 and M. Engg. and Ph.D degrees respectively in 1994 and 1997 from Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan. With current research interest focused in the field of semantic web, Professor Ali has published around forty papers in refereed journals and conferences. He has successfully supervised more than one hundred under- graduate and around ten graduate theses. He has worked as a member in the organizing committee/program committee/reviewer panel in a number of international conferences and journals. He was the Convener, Sectoral Committee for Computer Science and En- gineering, Board of Accreditation of Engineering and Technical Education (BAETE) in the period May, 2003 to July 2008. He was also a Member, Committee for eLearning Material Development, under the Alberta-BUET Linkage Project. He was a member of the Editorial Advisory Board for the book Technical Challenges and Design Issues in Bangla Language Processing. Professor Ali has been a successful contributor as a member of BUET panel of experts in various projects at national level. In addition to teaching, he served in a number of administrative positions at BUET. Professor Ali likes to call himself an, “Open Source Software Enthusiast” and wishes he could make everybody use LaTeX for all their publications. Dr. Ali is married and proud father of two sons.2. Saidur Rahman is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, BUET. He received B. Sc. Engg. degree in EEE in 1989 and M. Sc. Engg. degree in CSE in 1992 from BUET. He received M. Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Information Sciences from Tohoku University, Japan in 1996 and 1999, respectively. He joined the CSE Department, BUET, as a Lecturer in 1991. He also worked as an Associate Professor at Graduate School of Information Sciences, Tohoku University, Japan during 2003-2004.
Professor Rahman specialized in theoretical computer science and researches on graph algorithms, graph drawing algorithms, VLSI physical layout algorithms, computational geometry, internet routing protocols and bioinformatics. He has developed several efficient algorithms for planar graph drawing which have been successfully used in applications like circuit schematics, VLSI floorplanning and architectural floorplanning. He has more than 100 publications in internationally reputed journals and conferences. With the renowned computer scientist Professor Takao Nishizeki, he has written the graduate textbook “Planar Graph Drawing” published by World Scientific Publishing Co, which appeared in the bestseller list of the publisher. The book is considered as the most valuable pioneering work of planar graph drawings, and it has been widely distributed over the world. Recently he has written an undergraduate textbook “Basic Graph Theory” published by Springer. He has co-edited four volumes of the proceedings “WALCOM: Algorithms and Computation”, three of which have been published by Springer-Verlag. He served as a program committee member of International Symposium on Graph Drawing (GD) in 2003, 2005 and 2007, International Symposium on Algorithms and Computation (ISAAC) in 2006, 2011 and 2016, Annual Meeting of Asian Association for Algorithms and Computation (AAAC) in 2010, 2011 and 2012, IEEE Pacific Visualization Symposium (PacificVis) in 2012, International Frontiers of Algorithmics Workshop (FAW) in 2017. He also served as a program co-chair of the Workshop on Algorithms and Computation (WALCOM) for the years 2007, 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2017. Professor Rahman has served as a guest editor of Journal of Graph Algorithms and Applications (JGAA), Journal of Combinatorial Optimization (JCO) and Discrete Mathematics, Algorithms and Applications (DMAA).
Professor Rahman is leading an enthusiastic research group in Graph Drawing and Information Visualization Laboratory of CSE Department, BUET. He has supervised 18 M. Sc. Engineering theses and two Ph.D. theses. As an active researcher of computer science, Professor Rahman has made a significant contribution to build a community of computer science researchers in South-Asian region. In 2007, inspired by Prof. M. Kaykobad and with the support from Bangladesh Academy of Sciences, he played the leading role in initiating and establishing the International Workshop on Algorithms and Computation (WALCOM) for creating an opportunity for the researchers in this region to publish their research results in a low-cost quality conference. WALCOM has been held annually in Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Taiwan since then. Professor Rahman has been actively associated with world leading researchers, delivered invited talks to several universities at home and abroad, and chaired sessions in many international reputed conferences. He has visited many renowned foreign universities in Australia, Austria, China, Czech Republic, Hong-Kong, India, Italy, Japan, Korea, Germany and USA. Professor Rahman was a recipient of MONBUSHO Scholarship and JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship. He is a recipient of “BAS Gold Medal 2003” in the junior group, “UGC Award for 2004” and the prestigious “Funai Information Technology Award for Young Researchers 2004.” He is a fellow of Bangladesh Academy of Sciences and a Senior Member of IEEE. 3. Latiful Hoque is a Professor in the Department of CSE, BUET where he has been working since October 1990. He obtained his B.Sc. Engineering degree from the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, BUET in 1986. After graduation, he joined as Assistant Engineer in operation and maintenance division, Munshigonj, Dhaka Electric Supply, Bangladesh Power Development Board up to October 1990. He completed Post-Graduate Diploma in CSE in 1991 under joint program of Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok and BUET. He received M. Sc. Engg. degree from the Dept. of CSE, BUET in 1997. Dr. Hoque obtained prestigious Commonwealth Staff Scholarship in 1999 for PhD in the University of Strathclyde, UK. He was awarded the PhD degree in the field of Computer and Information Sciences in 2003. Dr. Hoque has been working in the field of High-Performance Database, Data Mining, Health Informatics and eLearning. He has published a textbook on Database that has been using in Bangladesh Open University. He has published around forty five papers in refereed journals and conferences. He has successfully supervised around twenty MSc Engg. theses and more than one hundred undergraduate theses. Currently has has been supervising two PhD students in the field of Health Informatics and eLearning respectively. He has worked as a member in the organizing committee/program committee/reviewer panel in a number of international conferences. Sohel Rahman is a Professor of the CSE department of BUET, the premiere university in the field of Engineering and Technology in Bangladesh. He had worked as a Visiting Research Fellow of King’s College London, UK from 2008 to 2011 and again as a Visiting Senior Research Fellow at the same institute during 2014-15. He is a Senior Member of both IEEE and ACM, and a member of American Mathematical Society (AMS) and London Mathematical Society (LMS). He is also a Peer-review Associate College Member of EPSRC, UK. Dr. Rahman received different scholarships and fellowships including Commonwealth Scholarship, Commonwealth Fellowship, ACU Titular Fellowship, University College London-Big Data Institute visiting grant, London Mathematical Society Visiting Grant etc. He is also a recipient of the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences Gold Medal and UGC Award. He has led research and development projects funded by British Council, UGC-World Bank and BUET. Dr. Rahman’s research interest includes, but is not limited to, theory and algorithms, stringology, metaheuristics, applied informatics, computational biology and bioinformatics. He has so far published 80 peer-reviewed international journal papers. Among his highly cited results are the work on high dimensional Knapscak problems, algorithms on different variants of sequence alignment problems, data structures for different variants of string and sequence matching and sufficient conditions for Hamiltoninicity and metaheuristics solutions for hard real-life problems in different branches of science and engineering. He is currently serving as an Academic Editor of PLOS One journal and Associate Editor of BMC Research Notes journal. He has served/are serving as guest editors in Journal of Graph Algorithms and Applications, Journal of Discrete Algorithms, Fundamenta Informaticae, Theoretical Computer Science etc. He has also served as Program Committee members in a number of conference series’ of international repute. He has collaborated with eminent scientists and researchers from both home and abroad. Dr. Rahman regularly writes reviews at Mathematical Review and Computing Review. In personal life, Dr. Rahman is married to Dr. Sara Nowreen, a graduate of WRE department and a faculty member of IWFM of BUET. His father is a Mechanical Engineer and his late mother was a Professor of Nutrition from the College of Home Economics, Dhaka. Biography: Ashikur Rahman received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Computer Science and Engineering from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Dhaka, Bangladesh in 1998 and 2001, respectively. He received his PhD in 2006 from the Department of Computing Science, University of Alberta, Canada. Dr. Rahman started working as a Lecturer at the department of CSE, BUET in 1998. After finishing his PhD, he also worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Simon Fraser University (2007), University of Calgary (2010–2011), McGill University (2011), Canada and Binghamton University (2012), USA. His research interests include ad-hoc and sensor networks, peer-to-peer computing, swarm intelligence, data center networks, cyber physical systems, back-end compiler optimization and neural networks. He is currently working as a Professor in the Department of CSE, BUET. As a principal investigator (PI), he received 3.5 Crore BDT (about half million USD) research grant for the Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project (HEQEP) “CP-3137: Capacity Building for Postgraduate Research on Remote Health monitoring in Bangladesh”. He obtained his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Computer Science and Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, Dhaka, Bangladesh in 1999 and 2002, respectively. He has more than ten years of teaching experience as a Lecturer, Assistant Professor and Associate Professor at BUET. Dr. Eunus is the recipient of prestigious UGC Award in the year 2012 for his outstanding research contribution. Engineering in Computer Science and Engineering from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Bangladesh. She started her academic career as a Lecturer in CSE Dept., BUET. Then, she went to North Dakota State University, USA, from where she earned MS and Ph.D. She came back from the USA and joined back as an Assistant Professor in CSE Dept., BUET. She became Associate Professor in September 2009 and Professor in the same department in March, 2015. She is the first female full professor in the department. She received ACM Upsilon Pi Epsilon Award in 2006, and the President Award of Bangladesh Govt. for merit position in High School Public Examination (HSC). Her research interests includes Applied Machine Learning, Applied Algorithms, Network and Systems and HCI. Shohrab Hossain is an associate professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). He obtained his Ph.D. degree from the School of Computer Science at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, OK, USA in December, 2012. His research interests include mobility of IPv6 networks, security and survivability of mobile networks, Mobile malware detection techniques and analysis, cyber security, security in Software defined networking (SDN) and Internet of Things. (Engg.) degrees in Computer Science and Engineering from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Dhaka, Bangladesh, in 2006 and 2009, respectively. Later, he earned Ph.D. degree in Computer Engineering from the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN, USA.
He is currently serving as an Associate Professor in the Department of CSE, BUET. He has served as a lecturer in CSE, BUET in 2007-2013. Prior to joining CSE, BUET, he served as a member, R&D, in Commlink Info.Tech. LTD, Bangladesh and in Stochastic Logic, ACI, Bangladesh, in 2006-2007 and 2006, respectively. Alim Al Islam received several awards based on his research papers covering best paper awards, best poster awards, best demo awards, travel grants, etc. He was awarded Andrew's fellowship, a two-year prestigious fellowship awarded by School of ECE, Purdue University. Besides, he achieved several other academic awards such as Dean's award from Faculty of EEE, BUET, Academic Merit Scholarship from Department of CSE, BUET, and general scholarships from Rajshahi board, Peoples Republic of Bangladesh. 14. His Ph.D. under the supervision of Steve Blackburn and Kathryn McKinley changed the way people think about reference counting and conservative garbage collection. He completed his B.Sc. in May 2007 and M.Sc. in December 2009 from CSE, BUET. His research interests are memory management (garbage collection), programming language, software engineering, and natural language processing. 16. He received his MSc Engg. and BSc Engg. degrees in CSE from BUET in 2008 and 2006 respectively. He received the prestigious Dr. Rashid Gold Medal from the President of Government of Bangladesh for achieving the highest grade in MSc Engg. at BUET. Dr. Adnan completed his PhD from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of California San Diego (UCSD), USA in 2015. He also worked as an active member of Microelectronic Embedded Systems Laboratory (MESL) and as a visiting scholar at University of California San Diego (UCSD) in USA. His research areas cover a wide range of topics in large scale systems that include Cloud Computing, Mobile Computing, BIG DATA Analytics, Data Science, Machine Learning for Large Scale Systems, Natural Language Processing, Green Computing, Data Center Networking, Smart Grid and Internet of Things. He received M.Sc. Engg. in CSE and B.Sc. Engg. in CSE degrees from the Department of CSE of BUET in 2007 and 2004 respectively. He is currently working (on study leave) towards a PhD degree in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering in BUET in the area of Intelligent Transportation Systems. He received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. Engineering degree from Department of CSE, BUET in 2006 and 2008 respectively. He also has a second M.Sc. degree in the field of computational biology from King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Saudi Arabia. He is currently pursuing PhD in Computer Science at Columbia University, New York, USA. His research area includes machine learning, computational biology, natural language processing and combinatorial algorithm. He is an alumnus of Faujdarhat Cadet College, Chittagong. 5. Sukarna Barua (সুকর্ণ বড়ুয়া)Assistant Professor Email: sukarna.barua@gmail.com, sukarnabarua@cse.buet.ac.bd Biography: Sukarna Barua is working as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) of Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology (BUET). He obtained his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from the Department of CSE, BUET, in the year 2009 and 2011 respectively. He graduated with a CGPA of 4.00 out of 4.00 and was awarded the University Gold Medal for achieving highest CGPA among all graduates. His research interests include machine learning, data mining, and spatial query algorithms. His research works have been published in reputed venues like IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering (IEEE TKDE), ACM International Conference on Information and Knowledge Management (ACM CIKM), Pacific Asia Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (PAKDD), and International Conference on Extending Database Technology (EDBT). 6.
