All CSE BUET at Stamford IT Fair 2004:

It's all CSE BUET at the 1st Stamford IT Fair, organized by Stamford University, Dhaka (February 26, 2004 - February 27, 2004). The project "Virtual University" by Imranul Hoque and Sonia Jahid, two Level 4 Term 1 students of the department won the best project award in the Software Category. "Telephone Controlled Voting System" of the same group won the best project award in the Hardware Category. Also, the project "Online Automated Digital Telescope" by Mushfiqur Rouf Nasa, Ahmed Khurshid, Md. Muhibur Rasheed, Kazi Saidul Hasan, and Musfiqur Rahman won the second prize in the Hardware Category. All of them are currently Level 4 Term 1 students of Department of CSE, BUET. All the leading universities of Bangladesh participated in the fair.

Virtual University is basically a Web based course management system. It enables students to visit the university web site and study courses over the web without leaving the comfort of their own home. Students can collect course materials, submit assignments, attend quizzes and exams from their home without going to the university. Based on STRUTS framework and MVC (Model View Controller) Design Pattern, this software is beneficial for both the students and the teachers in the sense that, all the course related activities that were done manually previously, can now be done online from anywhere on the earth.

The TeleVoting system provides support for an easy way of voting maintaining appropriate security. Many people don't care to vote for the wastage of time in the long queue in front of the voting center. People who are far away form the voting center, face difficulty to find any convenient transportation. Also, in the countries where the political situation is unstable, people are afraid to go to the voting centers. Considering voting as a citizen's national right, the Telephone Controlled Voting System has been designed at the minimum possible cost with the maximum utility. This system supports remote voting from far distances using a phone line only. The televoting device is connected to the phone line and interfaced with PC via parallel port. A voter calls the given phone number and enters his/her voter ID and password via the telephone keypad. After authentication, a list of candidates is read out to the user. User selects the desired choice and inputs the number through telephone digits. Upon user confirmation, the vote is accepted and saved to database.
