IEEE Computer Society BUET Student Branch Chapter

The IEEE Computer Society is a leading professional organization for computer science and engineering professionals. It is a part of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and focuses on advancing the theory, practice, and application of computer and information processing technology. The society provides resources like conferences, publications, standards, and educational programs, helping professionals stay updated with the latest developments in the field. Student chapters of the IEEE Computer Society are university-based branches that bring together students interested in computer science, engineering, and related fields. These chapters are an integral part of the IEEE, offering students opportunities to develop technical skills, leadership abilities, and professional networks while still in school. IEEE CS BUET SBC started its journey in the year 2019 under the supervision of our chapter advisor and faculty member of Department of CSE-BUET, Professor Dr. M. Sohel Rahman.

Events of IEEE CS

1. GameJam 2023

GameJam 2023, hosted by IEEE CS BUET SBC, challenged participants to develop a game within five days based on a given theme. Teams submitted their games via GitHub, along with a gameplay video and a short note on their experience. The top teams advanced to an onsite round at BUET, where winners were announced after thorough judging.

 

2. How TO _____ A Research Paper?

On January 25, 2023, the CSE Department at BUET and IEEE CS BUET SBC organized an event titled "How to _______ a Research Paper?" led by Professor Dr. M. Sohel Rahman. The event provided valuable insights on effectively reading and writing research papers, including a multipass reading system, key elements of a research paper, and tips on selecting journals for submission. Attendees appreciated the practical advice and personal experiences shared by Professor Rahman.

3. bTechWhiz

bTechWhiz is a program by bKash Career, organised for students and graduates of CSE. Students of CSE or anyone with programming or software development experience were being encouraged to apply. Bkash talked about their Company cultures and different technologies they use in their industry.After the session, bKash executives administered a written test that lasted for one and a half hours.



4. Introduction to Web3, API, DevOps: Hackathon Workshops

The CSE Department at BUET organized a two-day onsite Hackathon featuring a 24-hour coding sprint, workshops, and mentoring sessions. Participants focused on DevOps, API & Cloud Services, and Web3 & Blockchain, with tasks ranging from building CI/CD pipelines to writing smart contracts. The event, in collaboration with BJIT Limited, provided valuable learning experiences, particularly for beginners.

5. Bug Fixing At Scale - Using SAST Tool In Open Source Software Projects

OpenRefactory, Inc. and IEEE CS BUET SBC hosted a talk on Scalable Bug Fixing, featuring BUET alumnus Ataf Fazledin Ahamed. The event covered the Alpha Omega Project, open-source bug fixing tools, and OpenRefactory's bug-fixing process, offering valuable insights for students. The session also highlighted potential apprenticeship opportunities with OpenRefactory, making it an educational experience for aspiring developers.



6. Seminar On Quantum Computing & Information

On December 9, 2023, the IEEE CS BUET Student Branch Chapter organized an informative seminar on quantum computing and information, featuring Dr. Mahdy Rahman Chowdhury, a renowned researcher and Associate Professor at North South University. Dr. Chowdhury, the first Bangladeshi scientist to receive the ICO Galileo Galilei Award, shared his insights on the latest research trends in quantum computing and his extensive experience in the field. The seminar attracted students from various universities, offering them a valuable opportunity to learn about global trends and research prospects in quantum computing.



7. Protecting From The Catastrophic Risks of Software Failure: Key Innovations

On December 17th, Mr. Munawar Hafiz, a BUET CSE alumnus and Founder & CEO of OpenRefactory, Inc., delivered an insightful talk on "Protecting From The Catastrophic Risks Of Software Failure: Key Innovations." Drawing from over 15 years of experience in DevSecOps, he shared groundbreaking innovations in program analysis and transformation technologies. Mr. Hafiz discussed his work with leading tech giants like Microsoft, Google, and Mozilla, and introduced the iCR tool, which automates bug fixing. Attendees gained valuable insights into the future of software development and the quest to eliminate software bugs.

8. Devsprint 2024

CodeCrafters International Ltd. organized DevSprint 2024, an inter-university software development competition hosted by IEEE CS BUET SBC. The event brought together talented undergraduate developers from across Bangladesh to compete in coding, system design, and algorithm implementation. The competition was held in two phases: an online development marathon followed by an onsite final round at BUET. Participants showcased their skills, and the winning teams were awarded a total prize pool of 66,000 BDT. The event was highly successful, promoting collaboration and innovation among aspiring developers.



9. Beyond Borders : Masters in US & Canada

IEEE Computer Society BUET SBC hosted an online session titled "Beyond Borders: Masters in US & Canada," exclusively for BUET CSE students. The session featured alumni Rasman Mubtasim Swargo, Zaber Ibn Abdul Hakim, and Shafayat Hossain Majumder, who shared their experiences and insights on pursuing master's degrees in North America. The event offered valuable advice on opportunities, application strategies, and success stories, making it a productive session for students interested in higher education abroad.

10. Beyond Borders : Kickstarting Career in Europe

IEEE Computer Society BUET Student Branch Chapter held the second episode of the "Beyond Borders" series, featuring prominent alumni Shahad Ishraq and Kaysar L Abdullah. Shahad Ishraq, a System Development Engineer II at Amazon, Germany, and Kaysar L Abdullah, a Senior Software Engineer at Google, UK, shared their experiences and insights on CS jobs in Europe. The event, held on Tuesday, August 20th, at 6 PM, provided students with valuable guidance on pursuing tech careers in Europe. The session was well-attended, with enthusiastic participation encouraging future events of this nature.



BUET CYBER SECURITY CLUB

The BUET Cyber Security Club (BUETSEC) is a student-run organization at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) dedicated to promoting cybersecurity awareness, education, and skills development among students. The club serves as a platform for students interested in cybersecurity to collaborate, learn, and engage in various activities that enhance their knowledge and practical skills in this critical field. Capture the Flag (CTF) competitions, seminars regarding different cyber security fields have been arranged by the club frequently.

EVENTS of BUETSEC

Intra BUET CTF 2023

An onsite intra BUET CTF event was arranged at ECE Building, BUET. The competition was 5 hours long consisting of problems of various categories (Cryptography, Forensics, Reverse Engineering etc.) Around 20 teams from BUET consisting of 2-3 members attended the competition. Top 3 teams and rising teams from 20 and 21 batches were given prizes later on in a prize giving ceremony.

Intra BUET CTF 2023 2.0 (25 June, 2023)

An online intra BUET CTF was arranged which was 8 hours long. Around 30-35 teams consisting 2-4 members competed in this Jeopardy style competition.

Inter University CTF - BUET CSE FEST 2023

Online Preliminary Round

A total of 143 teams of 500+ participants from different universities participated in this round. The round duration was around 7 hours. Top 30 teams of this round proceeded to the final round. Problem categories were digital forensics, reverse engineering, cryptography, steganography, web exploitation, miscellaneous.

Onsite Final Round

Top 30 teams participated in the final round organized at ECE Building, BUET. Competition duration was 6-7 hours. Top 3 teams and BUET Rising Team were given prizes afterwards.



Cyber Security Practice Sessions

2 practice sessions were organized by the club to encourage people to participate in CTF. The first session was held on 16 August, where some basic problems of reverse engineering, cryptography were shown. The session was taken by Shehabul Islam Sawraz (CSE 18). Dr. Md. Shohrab Hossain Sir and Mehedi Hasan Elin sir motivated the students to participate in the cyber security field.
The 2nd session was held on 23 August. This session was based on cryptography. Attendees were given some problems to solve.

Workshop on Web Security

A 2 hour long online workshop on Web security category of CTF was organized. The instructor was Ataf Fazledin Ahamed (Secure Software Developer, OpenRefactory Inc.)

Workshop on Incident Response

Another 2 hour long online workshop was organized based on IR Category of CTF. The instructor was Yousuf Abdullah Fahim (1st Runners Up, FlagHunt 2023)

Introductory CTF Workshop

An introductory workshop was organized for the newcomers covering basic problems of Cryptography, Reverse Engineering, Digital Forensics and Web Security. Session was conducted by Abir Muhtasim, Md. Tanvir Hassan and Md. Roqunuzzaman Sojib from CSE 19.
